Labor law CA is once again in the news as legislation is being signed by current Governor Jerry Brown.

Why Labor Law CA Matters For California Employers

California labor law is often an added burden for employers and the net result is often increased costs, which impacts everyone doing business in California. This view was summed up by Georgi Boorman:

"The Golden State’s labor code is prescriptive without being clear, mandatory without accounting for an array of working relationships, and burdensomely superfluous without producing significant benefit to the workers it claims to protect. Indeed, it sometimes works against them. One wonders how a business can survive under the burden of California’s regulations, and indeed, if for many businesses choosing to ignore them makes it possible to travel the sands of the Golden State without sinking completely."

There are four bills awaiting the signature of the Governor as of this post. This infographic provides a brief overview of each proposed legislation and it's immediate impact for employers:

Labor Law CA: Keeping Ahead of Compliance

It is always critical for employers to remain informed and up-to-date on all labor laws both federal and state, as well as local regulations and requirements. HR professionals and others must be diligent to not only know what current labor law requires, but to anticipate upcoming proposed legislation. In addition, many laws passed today do not actually go into effect until the start of the next year or later. So it is important to track required changes or obligations.
