Bullying in the workplace has been been frequently highlighted in the media recently, especially by HR management experts. But too many employers are still unaware.

 

In the state of California, actions that constitute "unlawful workplace bullying" occur when an individual directs negative, inappropriate, or unwanted conduct or speech towards a worker based on certain protected characteristics of that worker.

Sexual Harassment In The Workplace And Labor Law

No one who hears or reads the news is unaware of the problem of sexual harassment. However, many businesses are not prepared for the consequences of it.

 

The bottom line is that harassment is prevalent in the workplace, including sexual harassment, and it can be costly for employers.  In 2017 alone, the U.S. Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recovered almost $71 million for victims of harassment in the workplace. Much of the fines, settlements and legal fees are paid by employers.

Be Clear On Workplace Harassment

Sexual harassment is an unfortunate reality in businesses. And employers can be liable if it happens. HR managers needs to be clear about harassment laws and policies.

Just when you thought it was safe to go to work. Based on the sheer number of complaints made and charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the workplace in America is still host to a variety of harassing behaviors.

While sexual harassment has been publicized a great deal over the last few years, it does not appear to have decreased noticeably in the American workplace. In fact, despite a heightened awareness of sexual harassment and other forms of harassment, there appears to be an actual increase in incidents.
